Nearly ten years ago, I think, I was over in California for a public lecture in Sacramento. \u00a0I hadn\u2019t been there in many years \u2014 basically, not since I had come for \u201cJunior Statesmen\u201d events at the state capitol building when I was in high school.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
So, just before taking me to the airport, my host gave me a quick tour of the city.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
We drove by such sites as Sutter\u2019s Fort and . . . the state capitol. \u00a0I was already quite familiar with it, because that\u2019s where we used to hold our meetings. \u00a0Nonetheless, as we approached it, my host was pointing out various things on both sides of the car\u00a0and then, without missing a beat or changing the tone of his voice at all, he pointed to the capitol building and (with the California\u00a0legislature plainly in mind) identified it to me as \u201cthe headquarters of the state\u2019s largest criminal syndicate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I still laugh, thinking about it.<\/p>\n
