Alma 39<\/a>:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m struck by\u00a0the name Isabel<\/em>, which may point\u00a0to the roots of the Book of Mormon in an ancient text with Near Eastern connections, as follows:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Jezebel\u00a0[\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05d6\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05dc<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\/\u00a0\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05d6\u05b8\u05d1\u05b6\u05dc<\/span><\/span>] of 1 Kings in the Old Testament has long given that name a bad reputation \u2014 such that it would have been quite an appropriate name to bestow upon a harlot.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In fact, the book of Revelation\u00a0does\u00a0<\/i>give that name to a kind of harlot, at 2:20: \u00a0\u201cNotwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel [\u1f38\u03b5\u03b6\u03ac\u03b2\u03b5\u03bb; Iezabel<\/em>], which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
And so does the Book of Mormon.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Only it does so in a manner arguably more accurate than could have been found in the King James Bible known to Joseph Smith. \u00a0Isabel<\/em>\u00a0(cf. the modern German transliteration Isebel<\/em>) is, in my judgment, a far better rendering of the Hebrew Izebhel<\/em>\u00a0or Izabhel\u00a0<\/em>than is the KJV Jezebel,<\/em> with its misleading consonantal j<\/em> (and better, even, than the Septuagint Greek, New Testament Greek, and Vulgate Latin Iezabel<\/em>, which are presumably responsible for the KJV\u2019s rendering of the name). Thus, the name Isabel<\/em>\u00a0is the same name as Jezebel<\/em>, and is thus unusually appropriate for its Book of Mormon context. \u00a0But Joseph Smith could not have gotten it directly from his King James Bible.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
