The Republican National Convention got off yesterday to a good start, described by Stephen Hayes of the \u201cWeekly Standard\u201d as something between a \u201cfarce\u201d and a \u201cdebacle.\u201d

I like Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah). \u00a0He seems to me a quieter, less theatrical, more effective, less personal ambitious, and far less abrasive Ted Cruz, committed to the Constitution and deeply knowledgeable about it. \u00a0(Given who his father was, that\u2019s hardly surprising.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A friend and I had lunch with him when he was first considering a challenge to then Senator Bob Bennett. \u00a0My friend was trying to convince him to run. \u00a0Since I had had direct dealings with Senator Bennett and liked and respected him enormously as a person, I held back a bit. \u00a0But I\u2019m quite happy with Senator Lee. \u00a0And so I found these items interesting:<\/p>\n

Finally, there\u2019s simply too much of this sort of thing continually swirling about Mr. Donald Trump and around the edges of Trumpism, which seems to me to be saturated, to a remarkable degree, with rage and bitterness and, sometimes, threats of violence:<\/p>\n

As one wit over at National Review<\/em> remarked last night, it\u2019s going to be a bit awkward on Thursday when Mr. Donald Trump reflects on the lessons he learned as a young black man growing up in Chicago.<\/p>\n

At least Mrs. Trump didn\u2019t claim to be the son of a coal miner<\/a>.<\/p>\n
