It\u2019s obvious that hurting tourism is among the goals of today\u2019s Islamist terrorists, and they\u2019re succeeding.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
You might think, at first blush, that this isn\u2019t all that big a deal. \u00a0After all, isn\u2019t tourism something of a frivolous and dispensable luxury?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Well, not really. \u00a0Significant dips in tourism seriously harm\u00a0travel agents, airline employees, tour guides, hotel employees, bus drivers, restaurant workers, and their families \u2014 as well, of course, as entire national economies in the aggregate. \u00a0And such damage ripples across societies generally. \u00a0If the restaurant worker can\u2019t afford new clothes for his children, that hurts clothing stores. \u00a0If the tour guide is without work, she can\u2019t afford the new apartment that she dreamed of, and that hurts builders and construction tradesmen and real estate people. \u00a0And so forth.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The fact is, of course, that hundreds of thousands of tourists are out there every day, even in these places. \u00a0And that the odds that any one particular tourist will be hurt are microscopically small. \u00a0But the threat is real, and it urgently needs to be dealt with \u2014 and not merely for the convenience of some upper middle class travelers spending their retirement money.<\/p>\n
