\u201cI am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father,\u201d Senator Cruz commented afterwards.<\/p>\n

The recently anointed\u00a0Leader of the Republican Party, Mr. Donald Trump, attacked Senator Cruz harshly and repeatedly throughout much of the Republican primary campaign, including mockery of Mrs. Cruz\u2019s physical appearance and several accusations that Senator Cruz\u2019s father was complicit in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

For most normal people, I suspect, that\u2019s quite enough to explain\u00a0Senator Cruz wasn\u2019t inclined to\u00a0sign on as a Trumpist. \u00a0But not in today\u2019s Republican Party, which plainly discounts the normal human virtues of a husband\u2019s fidelity to his wife and a son\u2019s loyalty to his father.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The booing began when Senator Cruz exhorted his convention audience to vote according to their consciences. \u00a0Many there immediately and quite correctly realized that \u201cvoting according to one\u2019s conscience\u201d is code language for \u201cnot voting for Trump.\u201d \u00a0And that, in itself, speaks volumes about the malignant force that has seized control of the Republican Party.<\/p>\n
