{"id":35346,"date":"2016-07-24T00:41:01","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T06:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=35346"},"modified":"2016-07-24T00:41:01","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T06:41:01","slug":"the-greater-escape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2016\/07\/the-greater-escape.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Greater Escape&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35347\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/07\/IMG_2466.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35347\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-35347\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/07\/IMG_2466-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Engelstad Theater Beverley Center for the Arts\" width=\"595\" height=\"446\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new Engelstad Theater in Cedar City<br>(Photograph by my wife)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been down in Cedar City for the Utah Shakespearean Festival, which is one of the very greatest things in the state and in the region. \u00a0In fact, it\u2019s a national treasure.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re veterans. \u00a0We\u2019ve attended every year for something like a quarter of a century. \u00a0Maybe a bit longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, we saw <em>The Cocoanuts<\/em> (a stage version of the old Marx Brothers movie) and <em>The Three Musketeers<\/em>. \u00a0It was, shall we say, a rather <em>light<\/em> day. \u00a0I tried and I tried to find an idea in <em>The Cocoanuts<\/em>, but I failed. \u00a0(The music is by Irving Berlin, but \u2014 I\u2019m trying to recall \u2014 I think the screenplay itself was written by Aeschylus. \u00a0Or maybe Jean-Paul Sartre.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today began light, as well. \u00a0A very solid production of <em>Mary Poppins<\/em>. \u00a0In the evening, though, we saw a fine presentation of Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0<em>Henry V<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, I\u2019ve always really liked\u00a0one particular passage \u2014 both the melody and the sentiment \u2014\u00a0from the Mary Poppins song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nm_BW1Vy6Zw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cFeed the Birds\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">All around the cathedral, the saints and apostles<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Look down as she sells her wares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Although you can\u2019t see it, you know they are smiling<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Each time someone shows that he cares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, this afternoon, I got a special kick out of that passage because, as a matter of fact, there was a member of the Council of the Twelve seated a few rows behind us and to our right. \u00a0He was wearing neither suit nor white shirt nor\u00a0tie, and \u2014 probably because he\u2019s one of the three newest apostles (though, for reasons of his privacy, I won\u2019t identify him) \u2014 almost nobody there seems to have recognized him. \u00a0(He was also in the audience for <em>Henry V<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was, by the way, shocked to see a number of empty seats at <em>Henry V<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s a magnificent play. \u00a0Why were there empty seats?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year has been interesting because the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts (also called, simply, the \u201cBeverley Center for the Arts\u201d) opened earlier this month. \u00a0It includes the new Southern Utah Museum of Art, the previously existing Randall Jones Theater, the new Engelstad Theater, and several other major facilities. \u00a0The Adams Shakespearean Theater, where we\u2019ve attended scores of plays, is no longer to be used. \u00a0Maybe (I haven\u2019t looked) it\u2019s even been demolished. \u00a0But the Engelstad preserves its general shape, which, in turn, was based upon the Globe Theater of Elizabethan London.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I knew Beverley Taylor Sorenson somewhat, as also her husband, the late James L.
