We spent most of today at the Viking Ship Museum<\/a>, the Kon-Tiki Museum<\/a>, and the Fram Museum<\/a>,\u00a0out on the Bygd\u00f8y Peninsula. \u00a0These are, deservedly, three of the tourist highlights of Oslo, and it was great to see them again. \u00a0The Viking ships are magnificent, and they remind me of my ancestors, whose remorseless and aggressive violence in combat have always inspired me and urged me on; they\u2019ve helped me to achieve the reputation for mean-spirited viciousness that I enjoy in certain circles. \u00a0And, of course, Thor Heyerdahl has been a hero of mine since I was a young boy. \u00a0I was even privileged to meet him when he visited BYU while I was a student there, before my mission.<\/p>\n

In the evening, we had a Mexican dinner [! Norse-Mex?] and attended a sold-out concert by the South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim<\/a>\u00a0in the \u201cAula\u201d or Hall of the University of Oslo, surrounded by murals painted by Edvard Munch<\/a>\u00a0(1863-1944). \u00a0You may be familiar with Munch\u2019s\u00a0most famous work, popularly known as The Scream<\/em>, which is located here in the National Gallery. \u00a0Actually, it\u2019s a bit more complicated than that. \u00a0There are multiple versions of it, most or all of which are still located here in Oslo. \u00a0But this<\/em> one is in the National Gallery:<\/p>\n

Interestingly, a statue of Edvard Munch\u2019s uncle, Peter Andreas Munch<\/a> (1810-1863), stands in front of the University Aula. \u00a0P.A. Munch was an important, pioneering historian of medieval Scandinavia; he died the year Edvard was born.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

As I write, my wife and my son are still out on the town. \u00a0They\u2019re attending a concert by the trumpeter Mathias Eick<\/a>. \u00a0I had a few things to attend to, so I walked back to our hotel.<\/p>\n
