Permit me to suggest another factor that, in my judgment, sometimes plays in:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some evolutionists have advanced conclusions that go far beyond biological science, arguing that Darwin\u2019s discovery proves the universe meaningless, life pointless, intelligence and personality mere chance occurrences, and the cosmos Godless.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some Christians object to evolution, obviously, because it conflicts with their literal reading of Genesis. \u00a0The more visceral reaction though, I think, comes from the sense that it devalues human life and deprives humanity of hope. \u00a0And that\u2019s not limited to conservative Christians.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I think this conclusion unnecessary, as well as\u00a0harmful to both religion and science. \u00a0But, in fairness, it has to be said that it\u2019s not only religious believers (let alone young-earth creationists) who have drawn it and pushed it.<\/p>\n
