Today, we caught a ride around the harbor of Bergen with a friendly and loquacious Norwegian on his motorized sailboat. \u00a0One of the things he pointed out to us was a very large and genuinely ugly building that was built by the Nazis when Bergen was the headquarters of the German U-boat fleet in occupied Norway. \u00a0(With its protected fjords and its easy access to the waters around Britain, Norway was perfect for submarines.) \u00a0The facility serviced the submarines when they needed modifications or repairs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Understandably, the Royal Air Force tried to take the building out. \u00a0Some of the bombs hit, our host said (I haven\u2019t researched his story), but they did little damage, since the concrete walls were three or four meters thick. \u00a0And bombing accuracy was a problem. \u00a0Unfortunately, most of the bombs went astray. \u00a0They hit a nearby elementary school, killing forty to fifty Norwegian children.<\/p>\n
