There are a lot of niqab<\/em>-wearing women in London, and particularly in the area, adjacent to Hyde Park, where we\u2019ve been staying.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be candid: \u00a0Despite\u00a0all my sympathies for Islam and for Muslims, I heartily dislike the niqab<\/em>, which seems to me deeply dehumanizing and alienating.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, while I disapprove, I also believe in liberty \u2014 including the liberty, within only the very broadest of constraints or limits, to follow religious practices that I don\u2019t endorse and don\u2019t even like.<\/p>\n

And, anyway, the \u201cburkini\u201d isn\u2019t the niqab<\/em>:<\/p>\n

I think that the niqab<\/em> is problematic. \u00a0Especially when, as has happened, some niqab<\/em>-wearing women have sought to have their driver\u2019s license and ID-photos taken while so garbed. \u00a0Sorry. \u00a0In that case, I would respond that driving, for example, is a privilege, not a right. \u00a0You choose. \u00a0Drop the face veil, or don\u2019t drive.<\/p>\n

It seems though, now, that a French court has overturned the \u201cburkini ban\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

But the underlying idiocy capable of thinking\u00a0this measure reasonable and justified still needs to be addressed \u2014 as, frankly, does a certain French tendency toward secularist fascism. \u00a0One of the French politicians interviewed indicates that he intends to pursue this moronic and, honestly, tyrannical policy further.<\/p>\n
