<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m reminded of a story that I believe I may have told here before:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A friend\u00a0of mine who has since left the Church once recounted an experience to me, somewhat at his own expense, from graduate school. \u00a0A prominent Israeli scholar had come to his university as a visiting professor. \u00a0One day, knowing that my friend was a Mormon, he asked my friend to explain <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormonism<\/a>. \u00a0My friend, who was still active at the time but who was already very, very liberal, theologically speaking, gave him a very liberal account of the Restoration. \u00a0And, he told me, he could easily see that it had left the Israeli scholar deeply unsatisfied.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many years later, the Israeli professor visited Salt Lake City and, as part of his visit, spent a couple of hours on Temple Square. \u00a0Shortly thereafter, he spoke with my friend again. \u00a0\u201cYou recall our conversation of years ago, I expect. \u00a0I think you could see,\u201d he said, \u201cthat your explanation of Mormonism didn\u2019t really satisfy me. \u00a0I couldn\u2019t figure out why anybody would make serious sacrifices, let alone be willing to die, for what you were telling me. \u00a0Now, though, I understand it. \u00a0If <em>I<\/em>\u00a0were to be convinced of\u00a0the story that I heard on Temple Square, <em>I<\/em> would be willing to sacrifice my life for it,
