This challenge will be difficult for many academics to take up. \u00a0After all, not a few\u00a0of us went into teaching largely because we treasure our own opinions and love the sound of our own voices. \u00a0We have brilliant ideas and insights that even the least interested desperately\u00a0need to hear, and sometimes at great length. \u00a0(My favorite definition of the word professor<\/em>? \u00a0\u201cSomeone who talks in other people\u2019s sleep.\u201d)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
The word lecture<\/em> derives from the Latin term for \u201creading.\u201d \u00a0Originally, before printing, lecturers would often read from a manuscript \u2014 their own, or perhaps a work of Plato or Aristotle or some other luminary \u2014 very slowly, so that students could copy it for themselves, and would offer commentary and elucidation along the way. \u00a0To a large extent, that mode of \u201clecturing\u201d became obsolete with Gutenberg and the advent of reasonably-priced textbooks. \u00a0And now, with personal computers and the internet and so forth, we really ought to be thoroughly rethinking how we do education. \u00a0Simply transferring information orally (and often in garbled form) from a professor\u2019s notes to the notes of a group of students is no longer quite enough.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
