My friend and colleague (and former department chair and college dean)\u00a0Van Gessel<\/a>\u00a0was the translator into English of many of the works of the late Japanese Christian novelist\u00a0Sh\u016bsaku End\u014d (1923-1996), and he has served as a consultant on the new Martin Scorsese film of End\u014d\u2019s novel\u00a0Silence<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Silence<\/em> is one of the most powerful novels my wife and I have ever read, and the stage version that we saw some years ago at BYU was also gripping. \u00a0I\u2019m looking forward (if I may say such a thing about so horrific a story) to the film.<\/p>\n
