It\u2019s an interesting neighborhood. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bitterly cold night in the Washington DC area. \u00a0But we enjoyed it nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We attended a performance tonight, at the Folger Shakespeare Library, by the Folger Consort. \u00a0They did <em>The Second Shepherds\u2019 Play<\/em>, one of the most popular medieval English mystery plays. \u00a0It survives in a sixteenth-century manuscript that belonged to the Catholic Towneley family of Lancashire \u2014 Protestant authorities shut the mystery plays down in England in the 1570s \u2014 and is now held in the Huntington Library, in San Marino, California (where I proposed to my wife).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Folger people have reimagined it as a musical, retaining the original text and using only authentic music, both instrumental and vocal,\u00a0dating from the 1500s or earlier. \u00a0Only some of it was familiar (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RQoP9iLwoos\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cDives and Lazarus,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a tune that Latter-day Saints will recognize and that was collected and famously used by Ralph Vaughan Williams;
