I mentioned on my blog the other day that I was very pleased with Mr. Trump\u2019s selection (after two misfires) of Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster as his national security advisor. \u00a0Dr. McMaster \u2014 he holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \u2014 represents the kind of scholar-warrior for whom I have enormous personal respect, bordering on awe. \u00a0(He is, by the way, the author of a 1997 book entitled\u00a0Dereliction of Duty<\/i>, which criticizes the actions of high-ranking U.S. military leadership during the Vietnam War. \u00a0I like this, because it shows independence of mind.)<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m even happier now, having seen this article.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not absolutely opposed to referring to Islamic terrorism<\/em> or Islamist terrorism<\/em>. \u00a0Many recent terrorist movements have obviously emerged from Islamic soil. \u00a0Moreover, it\u2019s a distortion to say, as some do, that they have \u201cnothing to do with Islam.\u201d \u00a0They use Islamic terminology, after all. \u00a0They frame their arguments in more or less Islamic terms. \u00a0They cannot be fully understood apart from their Islamic context. \u00a0But it\u2019s also a distortion to suggest that they somehow represent \u201ctrue Islam\u201d or that they\u2019re the inevitable logical outgrowth of Qur\u2019anic teaching. \u00a0They\u2019re perversions<\/em> of Islam. \u00a0But a perversion of x<\/em> is, obviously, related<\/em> to x<\/em>, and this can\u2019t be forgotten. \u00a0Mr. Obama, I think, went too far in that direction. \u00a0Mr. Trump\u2019s tendency, and that of some in his administration \u2014 most notably the one-time national security advisor Michael Flynn and the Trump regime\u2019s troubling\u00a0\u00e9minence grise<\/em>, Steve Bannon \u2014 is to go too far in the opposite<\/em> direction.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
