Both Peter and Paul died in Rome. Christians were persecuted to the death there. How, then, did Rome become the capital of western Christianity? Where did the institution of the papacy come from? Is St. Peter\u2019s Basilica really built over the apostle\u2019s tomb? I\u2019ll try to set out what happened in the famous \u201cEternal City\u201d in those crucial early years after the close of the New Testament, and to indicate some of the exciting things to be seen there.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
