I didn\u2019t hear Mr. Trump\u2019s State of the Union address last night. \u00a0Not out of principle nor out of general distaste for the man \u2014 though, had I stayed home, I confess that I might still have chosen to\u00a0read a mystery novel during that time, because I don\u2019t<\/em> like the man and I don\u2019t<\/em> consider him a conservative \u2014 but because I myself was giving a lecture simultaneously, up in Salt Lake Valley.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still, I\u2019ve heard that Mr. Trump was relatively calm, that he didn\u2019t ad lib<\/em>, that he neither taunted\u00a0nor really mocked anybody, that he used a teleprompter, that he seemed rather presidential, that he didn\u2019t boast about the size of his inauguration audience, that he didnand that it was, at points, a pretty\u00a0good speech.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was also, some are observing, the night that conservatism \u2014 or, at least some conservatives \u2014 abandoned\u00a0opposition to the modern omnipresent mega-state.<\/p>\n
