My favorite line from the classic 1951 science fiction film \u201cThe Thing from Another World\u201d comes when the scientists realize that the composite parts\u00a0of the \u201cmonster,\u201d which is played by James Arness, aren\u2019t animal but plant cells. \u201cWhat we have here,\u201d one of them says, \u201cis an intellectual carrot.\u201d I\u2019ve known several intellectual carrots in my time, but I\u2019ve never had to fight one in the Antarctic.

My general assumption is that the Universe is stranger \u2014 and far richer \u2014 than we commonly suppose. \u00a0And this little item (which might perhaps be read in conjunction with my earlier post titled \u201cIs Earth Alive?\u201d<\/a>) does nothing to weaken that assumption:<\/p>\n
