Did the current climate of distrust of large organizations and specifically of religious institutions play a role in the judges\u2019 decision? \u00a0Possibly. \u00a0Is the Deseret News<\/em> increasingly the more intellectually interesting of the two newspapers? \u00a0I think so. \u00a0Should I have received the Pulitzer instead? \u00a0Absolutely.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Still, congratulations to the Salt Lake Tribune<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
(Incidentally, my comment above about winning the Pulitzer myself draws on an actual experience: \u00a0When Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988 \u2014 the first Arab to have garnered that prize \u2014 some magazine or other tracked down his fellow-countryman, the eminent\u00a0Egyptian short-story writer Yusuf Idris [d. 1991], for a response. \u00a0The Nobel Prize was a wonderful\u00a0tribute to the quality of Arabic literature, Idris was reported to have said. \u00a0\u201c\u2018But,\u2019 he quipped, \u2018it should have gone to me.'\u201d \u00a0Reading that, I couldn\u2019t help but laughing. \u00a0I knew Yusuf Idris just a bit, and that was no mere quip<\/em>. \u00a0He was, I\u2019m sure, entirely serious. \u00a0I\u2019ve never met anybody who manifested\u00a0a healthier, more unembarrassed appreciation for his own greatness.)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
