My thanks to Virginia Brown for bringing this poem \u2014 by the English novelist, translator, and essayist (and friend of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis) Dorothy Sayers (d. 1957) \u2014 to my attention. \u00a0It\u2019s a short and simple but profound piece:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hard it is, very hard<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To travel up the slow and stony road<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To Calvary, to redeem mankind; far better<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To make but one resplendent miracle,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lean through the cloud, lift the right hand of power<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And with a sudden lightning smite the world perfect.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet this was not God\u2019s way, Who had the power,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

But set it by, choosing the cross, the thorn,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The sorrowful wounds. Something there is, perhaps,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That power destroys in passing, something supreme,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To whose great value in the eyes of God<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That cross, that thorn, and those five wounds bear witness.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
