This is no surprise. \u00a0Regulations and similar government-imposed economic burdens often have a disproportionately adverse effect on those least able to bear them. \u00a0They weaken or destroy marginal\u00a0firms, make unemployable the least skilled workers, raise prices beyond the means of the poor.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
That\u2019s one of the reasons why environmentalism and similar causes are often championed by the relatively privileged. \u00a0(College Students for Bernie!) \u00a0They can afford it, for one thing. \u00a0In the most cynical cases, they\u2019re protecting their turf. \u00a0If they already own homes in a beautiful area, for instance, it\u2019s to their advantage\u00a0to have only nicer new homes \u2014 and perhaps fewer new homes \u2014 added to their neighborhood. \u00a0If they already run barbershops, making licensure for new barbers more difficult blocks competitors from challenging their position in the marketplace. \u00a0They enlist the coercive power of the State in order to protect and further their own economic interests.<\/p>\n
