\u201cAmici Curiae Brief by Scholars of Mormonism Opposed to Trump\u2019s Refugee and Immigrant Ban\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
There are, of course, legitimate security reasons to pay close attention to those who are admitted into the United States. \u00a0But\u00a0this is simply another case in which Mr. Trump\u2019s wild statements during the campaign and his (entirely predictable) lack of verbal discipline and intellectual seriousness since taking office have interfered with his ability to govern and to enact even positive elements of his program. \u00a0Had he not spoken so loudly and publicly about banning Muslims altogether, he might not be in the trouble on this issue that he is. \u00a0But he was incautious, demagogically appealing to low instincts in sectors of the electorate, and he\u2019s paying the price for that.<\/p>\n
