A native of England, James Edward Talmage was educated at, among others, Lehigh University, Johns Hopkins University, and received his doctorate from Illinois Wesleyan University. I\u2019ve been told, but haven\u2019t independently confirmed, that he was the first Latter-day Saint to receive a Ph.D. \u2014 a degree that was still something of a novelty in the English-speaking world.
