Well, it was gratifying to see *Robert Cundick: A Sacred Service of Music<\/em> finally up on television. \u00a0I had not fully realized, before we began work on the film, how much work goes into every minute of a movie.<\/p>\n*

<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are several passages that nearly reduce me to tears every time I hear them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a <em>Deseret News<\/em> column\u00a0about Brother Cundick\u2019s work back in April 2014:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865601159\/Preach-the-gospel-always-if-necessary-use-words.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c\u2018Preach the gospel always; if necessary, use words'\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I first heard <em>The Redeemer<\/em> many years ago, I confess, it had little impact on me. \u00a0That has long since changed. \u00a0I find it deeply moving, and bits of it will come into my mind at the oddest moments. \u00a0And, of course, the great chorus \u201cHe is the root and the offspring of David\u201d gets me to the very core.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are two performances of that chorus:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FM0HFPvkU3M\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square (2008)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XpCjBiHdhIY\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Portland Ensign Choir and Orchestra (2012)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"p16\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128402031\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>I am the\u00a0root\u00a0and the offspring of David,\u00a0<span class=\"clarity-word\">and<\/span>\u00a0the bright and morning\u00a0star.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p17\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128402032\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>And the Spirit and the bride say,\u00a0Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the\u00a0water of life\u00a0freely. . . .<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p18\" class=\"verse\" data-aid=\"128402033\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I\u00a0come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\" style=\"text-align: right;\" data-aid=\"128402033\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Revelation 22:16-17, 20<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some may wonder what on earth the Interpreter Foundation is doing, producing a video about an organist and composer. \u00a0After all, isn\u2019t our focus most clearly shown in our scripture roundtables and in <em>Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture<\/em>? \u00a0Isn\u2019t our primary emphasis\u00a0on antiquity and ancient scriptural texts?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well, yes. \u00a0That\u2019s our principal focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let me say, first, that this film was separately funded from the rest of the Foundation, and that it didn\u2019t distract\u00a0from the publication of our journal and other such activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But permit me to explain just a bit further:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago, some of us began to think of a series \u2014 now called \u201cFoundation Stones,\u201d of which\u00a0<em>Robert Cundick: A Sacred Service of Music<\/em> represents the first installment, but, I hope, not the last \u2014 that would profile people, and summarize the work of people, who have devoted much of their lives to the faithful and intense study of the scriptures and the Gospel, and to expressing what they\u2019ve found in that study. \u00a0Future efforts, if they come about as we hope, will concentrate mostly upon scholars and writers. \u00a0But we started with a composer, and we hope also to do at least one film focused on the relevant visual arts. \u00a0We\u2019ve already done some further filming toward future productions. \u00a0(More funding would help! \u00a0Hint, hint.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana, the Church continues to\u00a0walk in the steps of the Savior:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mormonnewsroom.org\/article\/latter-day-saints-prepare-hurricane-harvey\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cUPDATE: Flooded Texas City Receives Fresh Water\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some may perhaps find this article, by S.
