Interesting articles in yesterday\u2019s edition \u2014 I\u2019m a bit behind \u2014 of the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, one of the world\u2019s greatest newspapers. \u00a0I know that you may not be able to get access to them, so I offer some annotations:<\/p>\n

Janet Hook, \u201cPoll Shows America\u2019s Divisions Growing\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDivisions in America reach far beyond Washington into the nation\u2019s culture, economy, and social fabric, and the polarization began long before the rise of President Donald Trump, a new Wall Street Journal\/NBC News survey of social trends has found.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe findings help explain why political divisions are now especially hard to bridge. \u00a0People who identify with either party increasingly disagree not just on policy; they inhabit separate worlds of differing social and cultural values and even see their economic outlook through a partisan lens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democrats, says the survey, are twice as likely to say they never go to church as Republicans are. \u00a0Democrats tend to see the divisiveness as driven by economic disparity; Republicans are inclined to see the split as political and driven by media choices.<\/p>\n

Everybody, the article concludes, thinks that we\u2019re too divided \u2014 and that everybody else is wrong.<\/p>\n

Thomas Grove, \u201cRussia Unveils Images of Its Troubled Past\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

At a time when Confederate (and other) statues are coming down in the United States, Russia is erecting statues to such worthies as Felix Dzershinsky, the founder of the Soviet secret police (formerly the Cheka, and then the KGB). \u00a0He oversaw the \u201cRed Terror\u201d and supervised the execution of hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens during the 1917-1922 Russian Civil War, often without trial.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

From the editorial page, \u201cThe Godfather of Missile Defense\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The late Senator Edward Kennedy mocked Ronald Reagan\u2019s proposed Strategic Defense Initiative (anti-ballistic missile defense) as \u201cStar Wars,\u201d and the derogatory epithet stuck. \u00a0But Reagan persisted, as did his science advisor, Jay Keyworth, who died on 23 August of this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a remembrance posted last week on the website of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Tekla Perry recalled a remarkably prescient comment of Keyworth\u2019s about the original rationale for SDI. \u00a0\u2018We have got a second-class nation,\u2019 Keyworth said, referring then to the Soviet Union, \u2018virtually a developing nation, threatening the existence of the United States, threatening the entire free world . . . I think it is a pretty frightening set of circumstances, and the more I look forward into the future, the more unstable I see it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the extent the North Korean nuclear threat is at all containable, we have Jay Keyworth to thank for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Obama\u2019s decree called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was the right thing to do, but he had no legal right to do it. \u00a0Now, Donald Trump is rescinding that executive order. \u00a0SoCongress must get its act together and, well, act<\/em>. \u00a0This shouldn\u2019t be difficult. \u00a0There\u2019s a broad popular and congressional consensus to do it.<\/p>\n
