A couple of months ago I read a book by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Benz titled Der deutsche Widerstand gegen Hitler<\/em> (\u201cThe German Resistance against Hitler\u201d) that recounted the heroic and often very costly story of those within Germany who opposed the Third Reich. \u00a0Many \u2014 some\u00a0of them university students and other young people \u2014 died for their resistance to totalitarianism.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

With such stories in mind, I can scarcely express my disdain for the coddled children of some of our colleges and universities. \u00a0I have in mind those who claim to need counselors and safe spaces to protect them from encountering ideas that might diverge from\u00a0theirs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAhead of Ben Shapiro\u2019s speech, UC Berkeley offers counseling services to students if they feel \u2018threatened'\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDo Yalies Want To Kill Free Speech?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There seems, among at least a few\u00a0on the left, to be a serious quest to marginalize and delegitimize those who don\u2019t toe the Party line, and to restrict freedom of speech.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget these still-relatively recent stories:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLena Dunham and Google Demonstrate Why Our Free Speech Culture Is Slipping Away\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Voltaire is often mistakenly credited with a line that might actually belong to Emile Zola: \u00a0\u201cI may disagree with what you say, but I will defend till death your right to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been cited so often that the sentiment may seem trite. \u00a0But it\u2019s at the core of what the American republic was intended to be about.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some simply seem to love the State, and to disdain free, private action:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

(Happily, private efforts to aid the victims of recent natural disasters continue, and not least among them are those\u00a0sponsored and coordinated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: \u00a0\u201cHelping Hands and Convoy of Hope Team Up in South Texas.\u201d<\/a> \u00a0These are efforts in which you, too, can participate: \u00a0Donate here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, however, freedom of religion and religious expression isn\u2019t highly regarded in certain circles:<\/p>\n

A couple of quotations from and about the American Founding might be appropriate here:<\/p>\n
