***<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Watching the reports from Florida this morning, as people wake up and cautiously emerge from their shelters to survey the damage wrought by what one site cleverly styles \u201cIrmageddon,\u201d I couldn\u2019t help but be reminded of several passages in 3 Nephi, in the Book of Mormon:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
8:5\u00a0<\/span>And it came to pass in the\u00a0thirty and fourth\u00a0year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great\u00a0storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land.<\/span><\/p>\n8:6\u00a0<\/span>And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible\u00a0thunder, insomuch that it did\u00a0shake\u00a0the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder.<\/span><\/p>\n8:7\u00a0<\/span>And there were exceedingly sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n8:9\u00a0<\/span>And the city of\u00a0Moroni\u00a0did\u00a0sink\u00a0into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof were drowned. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n8:11\u00a0<\/span>And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n8:13\u00a0<\/span>And the\u00a0highways\u00a0were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough.<\/span><\/p>\n8:14\u00a0<\/span>And many\u00a0great\u00a0and notable cities were\u00a0sunk . . .<\/span><\/p>\n8:15\u00a0<\/span>And there were some cities which remained; but the damage thereof was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain.<\/span><\/p>\n8:16\u00a0<\/span>And there were some who were carried away in the\u00a0whirlwind; and whither they went no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away.<\/span><\/p>\n8:17\u00a0<\/span>And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings . . .<\/span><\/p>\n8:19\u00a0<\/span>And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease\u2014for behold, they did last for about the space of\u00a0three\u00a0hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours\u2014and then behold, there was\u00a0darkness\u00a0upon the face of the land. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n10:9\u00a0<\/span>And it was in the morning, and the\u00a0darkness dispersed from off the face of the land . . .<\/span><\/p>\n11:1\u00a0<\/span>And now it came to pass that there were a great multitude\u00a0gathered\u00a0together, of the people of Nephi, round about the temple which was in the land\u00a0Bountiful; and they were marveling and wondering one with another, and were showing one to another the\u00a0great\u00a0and marvelous change which had taken place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/p>
