We\u2019re down here in southern Utah to take in the Fall 2017 plays at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City. \u00a0(What can I say? \u00a0I married a theater major.)<\/p>\n

Last night, Thursday, we attended a performance of William Shakespeare\u2019s Long Lost First Play (Abridged)<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s a rollicking farce in which three male actors play the Chorus, Antipholus, Dromio of Syracuse, Puck, Oberon, Holofernes, Ariel, Hamlet, Lady Macbeth, the Dauphin, Mistress Quickly, Sir John Falstaff, Proteus, Valentine, Juliet, Richard III, Beatrice, the First Witch (from Macbeth<\/em>), the Second Witch, the Third Witch, Bottom the Weaver, Viola, Cesario, Pompey, Cardenio, Pericles, King Lear, Prospero, Marina, Bear, Cleopatra, Richard II, Kate, Sycorax, Goneril, Cordelia, Regan, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VIII, \u201cMalvoliago,\u201d Petruchio, Caliban, Julius Caesar, Timon of Athens, Dromio of Ephesus, and William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ariel and Puck, you see, are at war with each other. \u00a0And the rest of the characters, their pawns, are all mashed up into one insane and rather slapstick story, written by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no great depth or meaning to it \u2014 and it pretends to none \u2014 but it\u2019s very\u00a0funny. \u00a0And it was acted with remarkable energy (not to mention velocity).<\/p>\n

Tonight, Friday, we\u2019re just back from the performance of another<\/em> farce.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This one was The Tavern<\/em>, by George M. Cohan<\/a>, in a new adaptation by Joseph Hanreddy<\/a>, who also directed it. \u00a0He opted to place the tavern of the title in southern Utah, and there are many references to Utah, Salt Lake City, Parowan, and etc., throughout the play. \u00a0Like\u00a0William Shakespeare\u2019s Long Lost First Play (Abridged) \u2014\u00a0<\/em>though, obviously, not to quite the same degree \u2014 it\u2019s absolutely jam packed with quotations from Shakespeare. \u00a0And it\u2019s very funny.<\/p>\n

One of my regrets is that we\u2019ll almost certainly miss the pre-dedication open house for the new Cedar City Utah Temple, which begins on 27 October<\/a>. \u00a0We drove by the temple yesterday and, after the play, again tonight. (We wanted to see it lit up.) \u00a0 It has a very striking location, viewed from the southbound I-15.<\/p>\n

Before the play tonight, we met up with two other couples that we know \u2014 they\u2019re down to see the plays at Tuacahn, near St. George (where we, too, are staying) \u2014 for dinner at Benja\u2019s Thai Garden<\/a>. \u00a0The food was quite good. \u00a0I marvel, though, at the changes that have occurred since I was a little boy, coming up once or twice each year from California to visit relatives in Utah (including St. George). \u00a0There was virtually nothing<\/em> in St. George in those days. \u00a0And a Thai restaurant? \u00a0Unthinkable. \u00a0You could pretty much choose between Dick\u2019s Cafe, the Big Hand Cafe, and one other. \u00a0(All three of those are long gone, I think.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moreover, if I\u2019m not mistaken, the St. George Temple was off on the edge of town, with nothing on the one side but desert. \u00a0But my mother, who grew up in St. George, always remembered hearing about a prophecy, locally attributed to Brigham Young, that the day would come when that temple stood in the middle of a prosperous city. \u00a0As, in fact, it now does:<\/p>\n
