S. Lewis, writing in 1947:\u00a0 \u201cThe immensity of the universe is not a recent discovery.\u00a0 More than seventeen hundred years ago Ptolemy taught that in relation to the distance of the fixed stars the whole Earth must be regarded as a point with no magnitude.\u00a0 His astronomical system was universally accepted in the Dark and Middle Ages.\u00a0 The insignificance of Earth was as much a commonplace to Boethius, King Alfred, Dante, and Chaucer as it is to Mr H.G. Wells or Professor Haldane.\u00a0 Statements to the contrary in modern books are due to ignorance.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>C. S. Lewis: \u201cLet us suppose a race of people whose peculiar mental limitation compels them to regard a painting as something made up of little coloured dots which have been put together like a mosaic. Studying the brushwork of a great painting, through their magnifying glasses, they discover more and more complicated relations between the dots, and sort these relations out, with great toil, into certain regularities.\u00a0 Their labour will not be in vain.\u00a0 These regularities will in fact \u201cwork\u201d: they will cover most of the facts.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 But, of course, a very great deal will have been missed.<\/p>\n<p>As has often been observed, \u201cScience now functions in society rather as the Church did in the Middle Ages.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the trenchant social critic Wendell Berry has observed,<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">This religification or evangelizing of science, in defiance of scientific principles, is now commonplace and is widely accepted or tolerated by people who are not scientists.\u00a0 We really seem to have conceded to scientists, to the extent of their own regrettable willingness to occupy it, the place once occupied by the prophets and priests of religion.\u00a0 This can have happened only because of a general abdication of our responsibility to be critical and, above all, self-critical.<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Religion . . . should not attempt to dispute what science has actually proved; and science should not claim to know what it does not know; it should not confuse theory and knowledge, and it should disavow any claim on what is empirically unknowable.<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">In shallow water one may not risk much by postulating the existence of an as yet invisible stepping stone just beneath the surface.\u00a0 But if the water is deep and swift, one should not start across if some of the stepping stones are hypothetical.<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a> C.
