Many Southern Evangelicals and ostensible political conservatives should consider this New Testament passage: \u00a0\u201cFor what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?\u201d (Mark 8:36)<\/p>\n

Some Latter-day Saints probably should, as well.<\/p>\n

They should also consider the story of Esau\u2019s sale of his birthright in exchange for a bowl of\u00a0lentil stew \u2014 giving up his inheritance for immediate gratification of his hunger \u2014\u00a0as it\u2019s told in Genesis 25<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Conservatives used to argue that character mattered. \u00a0Real conservatives still do.<\/p>\n

A fifth accuser against Roy Moore has now come forward:<\/p>\n

I confess that, while I don\u2019t think people should be pronounced guilty simply because they\u2019ve been accused of wrongdoing, these accusations do seem pretty credible \u2014 even if Gloria Allred is<\/em> connected with the latest one.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Is the timing suspicious? \u00a0Well, I\u2019m sure that it\u2019s not coincidental. \u00a0Roy Moore was once merely a regional buffoon \u2014 I freely admit that I\u2019m not a fan \u2014 but now he\u2019s stepped out onto the national stage. \u00a0And it\u2019s true that the national media dislike Trump and Trumpism. \u00a0But the accusations remain, in my judgment and that of others, entirely plausible. \u00a0Indeed, more than plausible.<\/p>\n
