charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35821\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/08\/800px-Chicago_sunrise_1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35821\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-35821\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/08\/800px-Chicago_sunrise_1.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago from the lake\" width=\"595\" height=\"189\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A view of the Chicago skyline (Wikimedia CC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we made our approach to the runway at O\u2019Hare, I found myself thinking of Carl Sandburg\u2019s famous 1914 poem:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Chicago<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"o-vr o-vr_12x\">\n<div class=\"c-feature\">\n<div class=\"c-feature-bd\">\n<div class=\"o-poem isActive\" data-view=\"PoemView\">\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hog Butcher for the World,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Player with Railroads and the Nation\u2019s Freight Handler;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Stormy, husky, brawling,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0City of the Big Shoulders:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Bareheaded,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Shoveling,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Wrecking,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Planning,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Building, breaking, rebuilding,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has never lost a battle,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse, and under his ribs the heart of the people,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Laughing!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o-grid\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"o-grid\">Sandburg is said to have described the poem as \u201ca chant of defiance by Chicago . . . \u00a0its defiance of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, London, Paris, Berlin and Rome.
