Back in the days when I was still permitted association\u00a0with\u00a0the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative that I conceived and founded at BYU and when I was, thus, also involved\u00a0on a regular basis in outreach to Muslims around the world, I had occasional\u00a0contact with Steve and Judy Gilliland. \u00a0I admire the work that they\u2019re doing. \u00a0I\u2019m glad that it\u2019s being recognized.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I also count Shabbir Mansuri as a friend. \u00a0I\u2019ve met him in California and Utah and elsewhere, and have been in his home. \u00a0A very good man, and a genuine friend to Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n

I wonder how those Latter-day Saints who defend Mr. Trump in such matters as this would respond if he were to tweet invitations to watch Ed Decker\u2019s sensationalistic and inflammatory 1982 anti-Mormon film The God Makers<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

In stark contrast, here is a valuable article that I recommend<\/em>:<\/p>\n

I would like to quibble though, just a bit, with\u00a0the author\u2019s reference to the great Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Rumi as an \u201cAfghan.\u201d \u00a0Technically, yes, he was born in the region of Balkh, which is located in today\u2019s Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he probably wasn\u2019t a Pashtun. \u00a0In other words, he wasn\u2019t a member of the ethnic group chiefly associated with Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, in any event, the poet lived\u00a0almost all of his life outside of his area of birth, and most of it under the Sultanate of Rum \u2014 Rum<\/em> being the Arabic for Rome \u2014<\/em>\u00a0meaning that he spent most of his days in Anatolia, or modern-day Turkey. \u00a0He was born in AD 1207, but, somewhere between AD 1215 and 1220, his family fled westward to Iran and then Iraq, ahead of the Mongol invasion from the east. \u00a0Probably around AD 1228, they finally settled in Konya, the former Iconium, a city located just a bit to the west southwest of the center\u00a0of modern-day Turkey. \u00a0Iconium had been \u201cliberated\u201d only recently from the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why he\u2019s called Rumi<\/em>, \u201cthe Roman.\u201d \u00a0He died in Konya in AD 1273 and is buried there. \u00a0And he wrote most of his works in Persian.<\/p>\n
