Yet the Qur\u2019an does not bring any new truths. It does not claim to do so. It is merely a restoration of those truths that had been revealed from the beginning. It carries forward what was written in the books of Abraham and Moses, confirming the earlier scriptures and particularly the Torah and the gospel.[1]<\/a> \u201cNothing is said to you,\u201d Muhammad is told, \u201cthat has not been said to other Messen\u00adgers before you.\u201d[2]<\/a> In fact, the Qur\u2019an addresses the heirs of the former prophets, the Jews and Christians of Muhammad\u2019s day, directly: \u201cPeople of the Book! Our Messenger has come to reveal to you Our will after an interval during which there were no Messen\u00adgers, lest you should say: `No one has come to give us good news or to warn us.\u2019 Now a prophet has come to give you good news and to warn you.\u201d[3]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

When the Christians and the Jews rejected Muhammad\u2019s prophethood, the Qur\u2019an announced that it was a restoration of the faith of Abraham, who was an \u201cexcellent example\u201d for the believers.[4]<\/a> \u201cFollow the religion of Abraham!\u201d it told them.[5]<\/a> Thus, the religion of Islam is seen to be the true religion of God, the religion revealed to Abraham before human invention and rebelliousness gave rise to the historical deviations known as Judaism and Christianity. \u201cAbraham was neither Jew nor Christian. He was an upright man [hanif], <\/em>one who had surrendered himself [muslim<\/em>] to God. He was no idola\u00adter.\u201d[6]<\/a><\/sup> Why should Muhammad or his followers give up the pure truth that had come to them from heaven in exchange for muddy and impure traditions of men that only vaguely and distantly recall their divine origin?<\/span><\/p>\n

Who but a foolish man would renounce the faith of Abraham? We chose him in this world, and in the world to come he shall dwell among the righteous. When his Lord said to him: `Submit [aslim<\/em>],\u2019 he answered: \u201cI have submitted [aslamtu] <\/em>to the Lord of the Creation.\u201d<\/strong>[7]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham, says the Qur\u2019an, had prayed for the coming of Muhammad.[8]<\/a>\u00a0 Thus, the Qur\u2019an gives Muhammad a place in the long and distinguished line of Semitic prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have revealed Our will to you as We revealed it to Noah and to the prophets who came after him, as We revealed it to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes; to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, Solomon and David, to whom We gave the Psalms. Of some Messengers We have already told you (how God spoke directly to Moses); but there are others of whom We have not yet spoken: Messengers who brought good news to mankind and admonished them, so that they might have no plea against God after their coming.<\/strong>[9]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
