For the record: I don\u2019t actually believe that the Garden Tomb is the right place. But it\u2019s familiar, it will serve as a good illustration, and, anyhow, we don\u2019t know exactly where the right place is (though it\u2019s probably within a few hundred yards) and, so far as we know, have no photographs of it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our culminating meeting yesterday afternoon, prior to the farewell dinner at a nearby hotel, was at the Garden Tomb, just outside the walls of Old City Jerusalem, in the eastern, Arab, part of the \u201csuburbs.\u201d \u00a0For my wife and me, this was the third time at the Garden Tomb during the past month.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the Garden Tomb, death, hereafter, and resurrection are very naturally on a visitor\u2019s mind \u2014 and especially so when he or she is (as I am) a believing Christian.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a melancholy little poem by Theodore Roethke<\/a> that I first encountered in, of all places, one of the tests I that took for college admission (either the ACT or the SAT; I don\u2019t recall which).\u00a0 It moved me so much that I went home and tracked it down, and I have recalled it ever since.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled \u201cElegy for Jane (My student, thrown by a horse)\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I remember the neckcurls, limp and damp as tendrils;<\/span>
\nAnd her quick look, a sidelong pickerel smile;<\/span>
\nAnd how, once startled into talk, the light syllables leaped for her,<\/span>
\nAnd she balanced in the delight of her thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

A wren, happy, tail into the wind,<\/span>
\nHer song trembling the twigs and small branches.<\/span>
\nThe shade sang with her;<\/span>
\nThe leaves, their whispers turned to kissing,<\/span>
\nAnd the mould sang in the bleached valleys under the rose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, when she was sad, she cast herself down into such a pure depth,<\/span>
\nEven a father could not find her:<\/span>
\nScraping her cheek against straw,<\/span>
\nStirring the clearest water.<\/span><\/p>\n

My sparrow, you are not here,<\/span>
\nWaiting like a fern, making a spiney shadow.<\/span>
\nThe sides of wet stones cannot console me,<\/span>
\nNor the moss, wound with the last light.<\/span><\/p>\n

If only I could nudge you from this sleep,<\/span>
\nMy maimed darling, my skittery pigeon.<\/span>
\nOver this damp grave I speak the words of my love:<\/span>
\nI, with no rights in this matter,<\/span>
\nNeither father nor lover.<\/span><\/p>\n

I actually once visited the place (on Bainbridge Island, Washington) where Roethke suffered a fatal heart attack and died in a swimming pool. \u00a0It\u2019s now filled in, as a Zen rock garden. \u00a0The problem of death confronts us all \u2014 in this case, both the person mourned and, with time, the mourner himself.<\/p>\n
