href=\"http:\/\/www.cruiselady.com\/landtours\/oberammergau-2020-passion-play\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a tour that I\u2019ll be leading in 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The famous Oberammergau Passion Play was first performed in 1634.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61592\" village of Oberammergau were threatened by a deadly outbreak of the bubonic plague that had been sweeping the region. \u00a0A man who had inadvertently brought the disease into the village itself died, and then other villagers began to catch it. \u00a0So the residents of Oberammergau vowed to God that, if he would spare them from the plague, they would perform a play every ten years commemorating and recounting the last days of Jesus. \u00a0After that vow, so the account states, not a single additional resident died from the epidemic, and all of those who had been suffering from the plague recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28425\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/12\/800px-Wieskirche1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the initial performance in 1634, the play has come to be presented in years ending with a zero \u2014 that is, once every decade. \u00a0(No staging occurred in 1940, because of the Second World War.) \u00a0There was a special performance season in 1934, marking the three-hundredth anniversary of its debut, and another special season in 1984, marking its 350th anniversary. \u00a0Over 2000 actors, singers, musicians, and technicians, all residents of the small village of Oberammergau, participate in the effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61601\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a time with my wife and her family, in 1984. \u00a0More recently, after a regrettable (and now, to me, inexplicable) gap, my wife and my brother and my sister-in-law attended a performance in CC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As we began to draw near to the year 2020, I announced to my wife and to anybody else who would listen, including the Cruise Lady herself, that I would be attending the Passion Play this next time. \u00a0If somebody wanted to plan a tour around that fact, he or she would be welcome to do so. \u00a0I intended to go in any case.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So there will now be a Cruise Lady tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61598\" style=\"width: 597px\" working out the details, but, right now, in addition to the Passion Play itself, it seems that we\u2019ll be visiting Nymphenburg Palace, the Wieskirche, and the castles at Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. \u00a0We\u2019ll take a boat ride on the K\u00f6nigssee. \u00a0In Salzburg, we\u2019ll take in a concert of music by the city\u2019s native son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and we\u2019ll visit Hellbrunn Palace. \u00a0And we\u2019ll visit Hitler\u2019s \u201cEagle\u2019s Nest,\u201d above Berchtesgaden, as well as the Nazi concentration camp at Bavarian, Austrian, and Swiss Alps \u2014 is country that I know well and love deeply. \u00a0I served my mission in Switzerland and I\u2019ve traveled here often and extensively. \u00a0And, something that\u2019s always mattered a lot to me, my father was involved, as a member of the Eleventh Armored Division of General Patton\u2019s Third Army, in the liberation of the camp at Mauthausen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28427\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a CC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping that we\u2019ll be able to incorporate some fascinating history in Wittenberg, as well. \u00a0The birthplace of the Protestant Reformation, Wittenberg \u2014 now officially known as <em>Lutherstadt Wittenberg<\/em> (\u201cLuther City Wittenberg\u201d) \u2014 is one of the most densely, foot by foot, interesting towns that I\u2019ve ever seen. \u00a0And, if I can swing it, we\u2019ll even go to the Wartburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25927\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25927\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/08\/800px-Wartburg2004.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img
