A youth boiling with hormones will wonder why he should not give full freedom to his sexual desires; and if he is unchecked by custom, morals, or laws, he may ruin his life before he matures sufficiently to understand that sex is a river of fire that must be banked and cooled by a hundred restraints if it is not to consume in chaos both the individual and the group.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Will and Ariel Durant,\u00a0<em>The Lessons of History<\/em>\u00a0(New York: Simon and Schuster, 1968), pages 35\u201336<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Will Durant (1885-1981) was also a philosopher (with a Ph.D. from Columbia University). \u00a0He was listed as the sole author for the first six volumes of <em>The Story of Civilization.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0His Russian-born wife, Ariel (1898-1981), came on as co-author for the final five volumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The quotation from the Durants \u2014 particularly its first sentence \u2014 puts me in mind of a wise passage from G. K. Chesterton. \u00a0It appears in his\u00a01929 book,\u00a0<em>The Thing<\/em>, in the chapter entitled, \u201cThe Drift from Domesticity\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, \u201cI don\u2019t see the use of this; let us clear it away.\u201d To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: \u201cIf you don\u2019t see the use of it, I certainly won\u2019t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Which reminds me of yet another remarkable passage, this one from the fourth chapter of Chesterton\u2019s 1908 book <em>Orthodoxy<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.
