Tom Garrett<\/a> (R-VA),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Massie\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rep. Thomas Massie<\/a> (R-KY), and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Lee_(American_politician)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sen. Mike Lee<\/a> (R-UT) \u2014 of whom most Utahns, I think, would have been very, very proud today. \u00a0All three were quite willing to be critical of their fellow Republicans. \u00a0I loved it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next, I listened to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magattewade.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Magatte Wade<\/a>, who spoke briefly on the subject of \u201cHow Free Markets Will Allow African Entrepreneurs to Create Prosperity.\u201d \u00a0She apparently speaks a great deal on American college campuses; I would absolutely love to have her address students at BYU who are interested in international development.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next came a panel titled \u201cIs Liberty on Track? \u00a0How Campaigns, Elections, and Candidates are Working toward a Big Libertarian Win.\u201d \u00a0The two principal candidates were former Republican governors <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Johnson\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gary Johnson<\/a> (New Mexico) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Weld\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bill Weld<\/a> (Massachusetts), who were, respectively, the 2016 presidential and vice presidential nominees of the Libertarian Party. \u00a0They were not quite as optimistic as the title of the panel suggested.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Such sessions get me in the mood for some quotations from the great\u00a0Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bastiat, author of the small 1850 classic, <em>The Law<\/em>.\u00a0 Here are three:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cSocialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cIf the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race?
