The second, by the great (and courageous)\u00a0Christina Hoff Sommers<\/a>, will be of interest to any and all parents of boys. \u00a0One of my own sons had an experience rather like one that she recounts: \u00a0As a class creative writing assignment, when he was very young, he wrote a piece about destroying his school. \u00a0Nobody was killed. \u00a0He made sure that everyone was out of the buildings before his fiendish little saboteurs leveled the place to the ground.<\/p>\n

The story was meant to be comical, and it was. \u00a0It was pretty funny. \u00a0And it was nowhere near as violent as the parody of the \u201cBattle Hymn of the Republic\u201d \u2014 \u201cThe Burning of the School\u201d \u2014 that my friends and I sang when I was very young and that, so Wikipedia says<\/a>, has long been popular with schoolkids (mostly boys, I expect) across the United States and in parts of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. \u00a0 Moreover, this particular son of mine is now and has always been an exceptionally gentle, kind, sociable boy. \u00a0But the teacher and the school administration reacted as if he were some sort of serial killer, and I didn\u2019t find that<\/em> very funny.<\/p>\n
