C. Cole says that \u201cthe same properties that make a snowflake appealing underlie the laws that control the universe.\u00a0 Truth and beauty are two sides of a coin.\u201d<a style=\"color: #003300;\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cThe selfsame symmetries . . . appeal to the senses in\u00a0 art and music and natural forms like snowflakes and galaxies.\u00a0 The fundamental truths are based on symmetry, and there\u2019s a deep kind of beauty in that.\u201d<a style=\"color: #003300;\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">John Polkinghorne:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Again and again in physical science we find that it is the abstract structures of pure mathematics which provide the clue to understanding the world.\u00a0 It is a recognized technique in fundamental physics to seek theories which have an elegant and economical (you can say beautiful) mathematical form, in the expectation that they will prove the ones realized in nature.\u00a0 General relativity, the modern theory of gravitation, was invented by Einstein in just such a way.\u00a0 Now mathematics is the free creation of the human mind, and it is surely a surprising and significant thing that a discipline apparently so unearthed should provide the key with which to turn the lock of the world.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">It is this fact of intelligibility which convinces one that science is investigating the way things are.\u00a0 Its insights are certainly open to correction.\u00a0 As access is gained to new regimes, profound modifications can be called for.\u00a0 Thirty years ago, when I was a young research student, no one had dreamed of quarks and gluons.\u00a0 Who can feel confident that thirty years hence they will still be seen as the ultimate constituents of matter?\u00a0 Nevertheless the coherence of the inquiry into the structure of matter, the beautiful way in which the properties of previously \u201celementary\u201d objects like protons and neutrons find a natural explanation in terms of their new constituents, makes one feel that it is a tale of a tightening grip on an actual reality.<a style=\"color: #003300;\" href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[4]<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><a style=\"color: #003300;\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a> Cited by K.
