I wrote, a couple of days ago, about my father\u2019s childhood confrontation with the challenge posed to the concept of divine justice by the process of milking cows (\u201cOne Perspective on the Theological Problem of Evil\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yesterday, though, we revisited the famous creamery southward in Tillamook, where it seems that that challenge has been eliminated by robotics. \u00a0My father would have been delighted and relieved.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Driving out with friends to the lighthouse on Cape Meares, though, we also passed by the \u201cTillamook Crematory.\u201d \u00a0I wonder whether visitors \u2014 especially non-English-speaking visitors \u2014 ever become confused between that and the creamery.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In local news, but in the same happy vein: \u00a0Yesterday morning, while skimming the news on CNN\u2019s website, I came across a reference to an article from the esurance blog \u2014 I hadn\u2019t even known that such a thing existed \u2014 bearing the striking title \u201cBeyond San Andreas: 5 Scariest Fault Lines in the U.S.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ranked first on its list is the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which runs for nearly seven hundred miles along the coastline of the Pacific Northwest \u2014 in other words, precisely where I\u2019m writing at this very moment. \u00a0Vancouver and Seattle and Portland are threatened by it, and there\u2019s no possible way that Seaside isn\u2019t, too.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cascadia, the esurance blog writer says, is capable of producing a\u00a0magnitude 9.0 or 10.0 earthquake \u2014 which would make it as big as, or even bigger than, the most severe earthquakes in scientifically-measured history<\/a>. \u00a0To put that in perspective, this coming earthquake could potentially be up to\u00a0sixteen times more powerful than the one that devastated San Francisco in 1906), which has been estimated as having measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. \u00a0It might last as long as four minutes \u2014 an eternity for those experiencing it \u2014 and, says the esurance writer, would deliver \u201ca mighty tsunami of unimaginable proportions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As I write, I\u2019m looking out over the Pacific Ocean. \u00a0Maybe we should leave earlier than we had planned?<\/p>\n
