Looking from the end of Kj\u00f8snesfjord, a little arm of Lake J\u00f8lster, toward the town of Skei in the very far distance. The farm on which my grandmother grew up is (barely) visible on the left bank of the fjord, just beyond the glacial stream and the green ridge in the foreground. I have relatives all around the lake. \u00a0My wife took this photo with her iPhone a few years back, during our most recent visit to Norway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Please mark your calendars for the fourth \u201cTemple on Mount Zion\u201d conference. \u00a0Jointly sponsored by BYU\u2019s College of Humanities, BYU\u2019s Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages, and the Interpreter Foundation, it will convene between roughly 9 AM and 5 PM \u2014 the precise times remain to be confirmed \u2014 \u00a0on Saturday, 10 November 2018, in Room 251 of the Tanner Building on the Brigham Young University campus.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I have a list of the tentative presentation titles. \u00a0When they\u2019re finalized, they will, of course, be made public. \u00a0In the meantime, the list of speakers includes\u00a0Matthew Bowen,\u00a0Jeffrey Bradshaw, S.\u00a0Kent Brown,\u00a0John Gee,\u00a0Stephen Ricks, Avram Shannon,\u00a0Stephen Smoot, John Thompson, and\u00a0Thom Wayment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Late this afternoon, my wife and I attended a performance of the very romantic romantic comedy Daddy Long Legs<\/em> at the Hale Center Theater in Orem. \u00a0It\u2019s a musical, with only two characters.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I had never heard of the play before, and I have to confess that, for some reason, the title suggested to me that it would be really, even painfully, corny. \u00a0I wasn\u2019t much looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t. \u00a0In fact, it was really quite affecting (even though, easily within the first five minutes, I had foreseen what the ultimate resolution would be). \u00a0To my everlasting shame, I actually teared up at a couple of points toward the end. \u00a0Rather a disgrace, really. \u00a0Quite unbecoming of an unemotional Scandinavian such as I.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spencer Hunsicker<\/a> was very good as one half of the cast, and Scout Smith<\/a> was perfect (and perfectly adorable) as the other half. \u00a0(Her character talks, at one point, about her love for Jane Eyre, and she herself would make an excellent Jane.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hope that you\u2019ll get a chance to see this performance. \u00a0As I regularly say, the two Hale theaters are among our area\u2019s treasures.<\/p>\n

Immediately after the play, we joined a group of our neighbors for dinner in our next-door neighbors\u2019 back yard. \u00a0The occasion was a report from the recently released president of the Norway Oslo Mission and his wife, who left for that assignment from a house nearly across the street from us (which they sold). \u00a0Our next-door neighbors served for a year in the Mission office there during our other friends\u2019 tenure.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was interesting and enjoyable. \u00a0I\u2019m very fond of Norway. \u00a0I like it, among other reasons, because that\u2019s where my grandmother came from. \u00a0She emigrated to North Dakota when she was eighteen, and she never saw her parents again. \u00a0It helps, too, that it\u2019s often spectacularly beautiful.<\/p>\n
