{"id":65367,"date":"2018-09-18T23:43:56","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T05:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=65367"},"modified":"2018-09-19T22:34:13","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T04:34:13","slug":"rise-and-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2018\/09\/rise-and-fall.html","title":{"rendered":"Rise and Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17853\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/02\/1024px-Courtyard2js.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17853\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/02\/1024px-Courtyard2js.jpg\" alt=\"The Grand Umayyad Mosque, in Damascus, Syria\" width=\"597\" height=\"395\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the courtyard of the early eighth-century Grand Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I share here a couple of passages extracted for my future use from Michael Bonner, <em>Jihad in Islamic History: Doctrines and Practice<\/em> (Princeton and Oxford: Princeton University Press, 2006).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the first, Professor Bonner refers to the Umayyad Dynasty, which came to power after the close of the reigns of the four so-called <em>Rashidun<\/em> (or \u201crightly-guided\u201d) caliphs \u2014 Abu Bakr, \u2018Umar, \u2018Uthman, and \u2018Ali \u2014 who had succeeded the Prophet Muhammad, in their turns, as the rulers of the Islamic <em>umma<\/em> after his death in AD 632. \u00a0The Umayyads ruled from Damascus between AD 661 and AD 750, when they were overthrown by the \u2018Abbasids..<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">According to [Khalid Yahya] Blankinship, it was the jihad that provided the ideological basis to the entire Umayyad enterprise: \u00a0\u201cThe [Umayyad] caliphate constituted the <em>jihad<\/em> state par excellence. \u00a0Its main reason for existence, aside from maintaining God\u2019s law, was to protect Islam and to expand the territory under its control, and its reputation was strongly bound to its military success. . . . \u00a0Joseph Schacht, a modern historian of early Islamic law, thought that the imperial legislation of the Umayyads provided much of the material basis for what eventually became Islamic law, especially in the area of the law of war (<em>siyar<\/em>). \u00a0In other words, the Umayyad caliphs, through their governors, generals, and judges, began and developed much of what eventually became the Islamic law of war; only afterward was this law of war ascribed to more acceptably Islamic sources such as the Companions of the Prophet and, of course, the Prophet himself. \u00a0(122)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In this view [he is evidently summarizing Bernard Lewis\u2019s important 2001 book <em>What Went Wrong?<\/em>], the Muslims enjoyed cultural, intellectual, and material superiority over the western Europeans for many centuries. \u00a0And while Muslim historians and geographers gathered knowledge about what they recognized as the other true civilizations, especially China and India, few of them showed any interest in those boggy, frozen, barbaric lands that made up western Europe. \u00a0Muslim attitudes toward non-Muslims were formed at home, in the Muslim lands, and included both tolerance and a sense of superiority. \u00a0Thus the Muslims were unprepared, especially from the fifteenth century onward, when the Europeans grew prosperous and powerful and eventually outflanked the principal Muslim power of the time, the Ottoman Empire. \u00a0Now for years these same Ottomans had adapted European technology and often made better use of it than the Europeans themselves. \u00a0But in the modern age, the Ottomans failed to keep up. \u00a0Their vocabulary for understanding the West did not advance far beyond what it had been in the early Middle Ages. \u00a0Efforts at reform came too late. \u00a0In this view, the Crusades represent both a first moment of European expansion into the Islamic heartland and, at the same time, a first failure on the part of Islam to recognize its adversary for who he truly was.
