***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I taught the Gospel Doctrine lesson in my ward today. \u00a0Fortunately, I ran out of time at the end and was, therefore, unable to fully express my heresy, which is as follows:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
To me, it\u2019s pretty obvious that Isaiah 5:26-29 isn\u2019t primarily about the gathering of Israel, contrary to the LDS chapter heading, which reads \u201cThe Lord will lift an ensign and gather Israel.\u201d \u00a0Rather, it\u2019s about the armies of Mesopotamia \u2014 first of the Assyrians and then of the Babylonians \u2014 that, in accordance with the warnings and threats with which Isaiah 1-4 and even the previous verses of Isaiah 5 itself are rife, will soon scourge Palestine:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
26\u00a0<\/span>\u00b6\u00a0<\/span>And he will lift up an\u00a0ensign\u00a0to the nations from far, and will\u00a0hiss\u00a0unto them from the\u00a0end\u00a0of the earth: and, behold, they shall\u00a0come\u00a0with speed swiftly:<\/span><\/p>\n27\u00a0<\/span>None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:<\/span><\/p>\n28\u00a0<\/span>Whose arrows\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses\u2019 hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:<\/span><\/p>\n29\u00a0<\/span>Their roaring\u00a0shall be<\/span>\u00a0like a lion, they shall roar like young\u00a0lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the\u00a0prey, and shall carry\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0away safe, and none shall deliver\u00a0it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I mean, look at the immediately preceding verse:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
25\u00a0<\/span>Therefore is the\u00a0anger\u00a0of the\u00a0Lord<\/span><\/span>\u00a0kindled against his people, and he hath\u00a0stretched\u00a0forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases\u00a0were<\/span>torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0stretched out still.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
And look at the immediately succeeding verse, with which the chapter closes:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
30\u00a0<\/span>And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if\u00a0one<\/span>\u00a0look unto the land, behold darkness\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>sorrow, and the\u00a0light\u00a0is\u00a0darkened\u00a0in the heavens thereof.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
This is not to be a happy event. \u00a0It\u2019s a sad and even terrifying one.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Can language from Isaiah 5:26-29 be used to describe the gathering? \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Absolutely. \u00a0And the future gathering and peace of Israel are definitely general Isaianic themes. \u00a0But that\u2019s not the original, primary meaning of the passage, in its day.<\/p>\n
