Dobzhansky, geneticist\" width=\"300\" height=\"435\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Theodosius Dobzhansky<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019re the same guy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Whether he ever actually went to bars, I have no idea whatever.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Theodosius Grygorovych Dobzhansky\u00a0(1900\u20131975) was a prominent Ukrainian-American\u00a0geneticist\u00a0and\u00a0evolutionary biologist \u2014 he came to the United States in 1927, at the age of 27 \u2014 who taught successively at Columbia University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and Rockefeller University, and then \u2014 after the death of his wife, Natasha, and his own retirement \u2014 went out to join his former student <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francisco_J._Ayala\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Francisco J. Ayala<\/a> at the University of California at Davis.\u00a0 \u00a0He was a central figure in developing the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modern_synthesis_(20th_century)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cmodern synthesis\u201d<\/a> in the field of\u00a0evolutionary biology.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dobzhansky was also a firm believer in a personal God, as well as a communicant member of the Eastern Orthodox Church. \u00a0He believed that God used evolution to create life in all of its varieties.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of his thoughts on both evolution and religious faith:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cNothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cSeen in the light of evolution, biology is, perhaps, intellectually the most satisfying and inspiring science. Without that light it becomes a pile of sundry facts \u2014 some of them interesting or curious but making no meaningful picture as a whole.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cThe evolution of life, and the evolutionary origin of mankind, are scientifically established as firmly and completely as any historical event not witnessed by human observers. Any concession to anti-evolutionists, suggesting that there are scientific reasons to doubt the facticity of evolution, would be propagating a plain untruth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cDoes the evolutionary doctrine clash with religious faith? It does not. It is a blunder to mistake the Holy Scriptures for elementary textbooks of astronomy, geology, biology, and anthropology. Only if symbols are construed to mean what they are not intended to mean can there arise imaginary, insoluble conflicts. As pointed out above, the blunder leads to blasphemy: the Creator is accused of systematic deceitfulness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cNature\u2019s stern discipline enjoins mutual help at least as often as warfare. The fittest may also be the gentlest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Again today, an anonymous critic has claimed that, no matter how much I deny it, I\u2019m a young-earth creationist.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, of course, this is the same critic who has invented bogus quotations that he attributes to me online in an effort to embarrass me; invented demonstrable falsehoods about my appearance for his trusting audience; falsely claimed to have traveled with me and to have observed my allegedly bizarre behavior in Israel; repeatedly apologized to the world, online, for my cruelty, dishonesty, and absurdity; and so forth. \u00a0Moreover, since at least 2012 I\u2019ve received a very large number of crude, personally insulting, anonymous emails, all recognizably from the same author, and, for whatever it\u2019s worth, if I had to guess, he would (for several reasons) be my choice as the person most likely to have written them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmormon.org\/conference\/august-2018\/apologetics-what-why-and-how\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my August 2018 remarks at the annual FairMormon conference<\/a>, I apparently misspoke, identifying my Malevolent Stalker as the most probable candidate for the authorship of those emails. \u00a0(It\u2019s possible, though not likely, that the transcription of my talk, which is extremely rough, got me wrong at that point.) \u00a0I\u2019ve long thought, however, that, while\u00a0the Stalker has plainly been engaged in an oddly focused personal vendetta against me for well over a decade, he\u2019s also too highbrow (in his curious way) to have written such emails. \u00a0By contrast, his wannabe imitator shares that vendetta or even exceeds him in that department and, significantly, isn\u2019t as bright. \u00a0Furthermore, his hostility seems more visceral \u2014 I have literally no idea why \u2014 and there are some distinct and specific thematic parallels between his online comments about me and the contents of the emails sent to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t write him off yet, merely because he has a bizarre fixation on me and no scruples against lying.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s actually right. \u00a0I <em>do<\/em> believe in a young earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I believe that the earth is approximately\u00a04.543\u00a0billion\u00a0years old, which is <em>very<\/em> young compared to the approximately 13.8 billion years that have elapsed since the Big Bang.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, once I\u2019ve admitted <em>that<\/em>, there evidently\u00a0<em>isn\u2019t<\/em> any significant difference between me and, say, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ken_Ham\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ken Ham<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Ussher\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Archbishop Ussher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>QED.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 And they\u2019re the same guy. \u00a0 (Whether he ever actually went to bars, I have no idea whatever.) \u00a0 Theodosius Grygorovych Dobzhansky\u00a0(1900\u20131975) was a prominent Ukrainian-American\u00a0geneticist\u00a0and\u00a0evolutionary biologist \u2014 he came to the United States in 1927, at the age of 27 \u2014 who taught successively at Columbia University, the California Institute of Technology [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-66363","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>A distinguished evolutionary biologist, a prominent geneticist, and a devout theist walk into a bar<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
