Esposito and Dalia Mogahed,\u00a0<em>Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think<\/em>\u00a0(New York: Gallup Press, 2007):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The heightened sense of the West\u2019s threat to political freedom and to Islamic identity has likely reinforced the desire for <em>Sharia<\/em>. \u00a0Recourse to <em>Sharia<\/em>, the blueprint for an Islamic society, provides a centuries-old paradigm. \u00a0Thus, however different and diverse Muslim populations may be, for many, <em>Sharia<\/em> is central to faith and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">While moderates (83%) and political radicals (91%) alike want <em>Sharia<\/em> as a source of law, a significantly higher percentage of the politically radicalized (59% vs. 32% of moderates) want to see <em>Sharia<\/em> as the <em>only<\/em> source of law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">This desire for <em>Sharia<\/em> is reminiscent of the reasons behind the early development of Islamic law, to create a rule of law as a shield against the power of the caliph or sultan. \u00a0As Richard Bulliet notes in <em>The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization<\/em>: \u00a0\u201cAll that restrained rulers from acting as tyrants was Islamic law, sharia. \u00a0Since the law was based on divine rather than human principles, no ruler could change it to serve his own interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Today, greater interest by the politically radicalized in the implementation of Islamic law reflects their desire to limit the powers of rulers and regimes that they regard as authoritarian, \u201cun-Islamic,\u201d and corrupt. \u00a0However, this is not a call for theocracy. \u00a0When asked to what extent they want religious leaders involved in public life (secular family law, curricula in schools, drafting new laws or a constitution, deciding who may run for office or how women may dress in public, or determining their country\u2019s foreign policy), majorities of the politically radicalized and moderates say they do not want religious leaders to be directly in charge. \u00a0Nevertheless, radicals are more likely to want religious leaders to play an \u201cadvisory\u201d role, consistent with the traditional role of <em>ulama<\/em> as \u201cadvisers\u201d to rulers. \u00a0(92-93)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was a ridiculous case, which is putting it very charitably:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/pakistan-acquits-catholic-mother-of-five-on-death-row-for-blasphemy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cPakistan Acquits Catholic Mother of Five on Death Row for Blasphemy\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m extremely pleased that she has been acquitted, but I doubt that the extremist loons will take the verdict lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theweek.co.uk\/97335\/china-s-secret-muslim-internment-camps-revealed\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cChina\u2019s secret Muslim internment camps revealed: BBC investigation exposes \u2018prison-type structure\u2019 exclusively for Xinjiang\u2019s Muslim minorities\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here, in honor of the holiday, is an Islamic viewpoint on Halloween:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calislamic.com\/halloween-and-conformity\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHalloween and Conformity\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just in case you\u2019re interested, here\u2019s a Latter-day Saint point of view for purposes of comparison:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldsliving.com\/What-the-Church-Has-Said-About-Halloween\/s\/86783\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhat the Church Has Said About Halloween\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 I share with you an additional passage that caught my notice in John L.
