Esposito and Dalia Mogahed,\u00a0<em>Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think<\/em>\u00a0(New York: Gallup Press, 2007), which I believe to be a quite important book:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">[L]ike other religious and ethnic groups, Europe\u2019s Muslims are not homogenous. . . . [M]any do not even practice their religion. \u00a0They are at best cultural Muslims. \u00a0Indeed, most of those who rioted and torched France\u2019s <em>banlieues<\/em> (suburbs) in 2005 were not mosquegoers. \u00a0(140)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">[A]ccording to media reports, many of the 9\/11 hijackers themselves exhibited behaviors hardly practiced by a religious Muslim. \u00a0A number of them drank heavily and frequented strip clubs and porn shops. \u00a0(69)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">There is also wide diversity among Muslim nations \u2014 politically, economically, culturally, and religiously. \u00a0As discussed earlier, oil-rich and rapidly developing Gulf states such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia hardly resemble poor, struggling, underdeveloped countries such as Mali and Yemen. \u00a0Islamic republics such as Iran contrast sharply with the more secular-oriented governments of Egypt and Syria. \u00a0Arab and Muslim nations have a history of rivalry and conflict: Saddam\u2019s Iraq versus Iran, Iraq versus the Gulf states, and Egypt versus Sudan. \u00a0We also forget the vast cultural differences among Muslims: Less than a quarter are Arab; the majority of Muslims are Asian or African. \u00a0Finally, significant religious differences exist between Sunni and Shia Muslims who, despite their common Islamic faith, have critical theological and political differences and religious orientations that range from ultra-orthodox to liberal reformers. \u00a0(153-154)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In contrast to the 32% of Americans who say that they see nothing to admire about Muslims, the percentage of Muslims who say \u00a0that they admire nothing about the West is significantly lower (6.3% in Jordan, 10% in Saudi Arabia, and 1% in Egypt). \u00a0(141)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Interestingly, the more Americans report knowing about Muslim countries, the more likely they are to hold positive views of those countries. \u00a0This same trend is found as it relates to knowing a Muslim: \u00a0Those Americans who know at least one Muslim are more likely to hold positive views of Muslims and Islam. \u00a0(155)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two interesting and relevant links:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/10\/30\/654555060\/muslims-are-having-a-hollywood-moment\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMuslims Are Having A Hollywood Moment\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-bibi-verdict-avoids-pakistans-blasphemy-problem\/a-46102200\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cOpinion: Bibi verdict avoids Pakistan\u2019s blasphemy problem:\u00a0The Supreme Court\u2019s decision to acquit Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who had been condemned to death on blasphemy charges, is positive, but Pakistan needs procedural changes to amend controversial laws, says Anis Haroon.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Here are five more passages that I\u2019ve extracted from John L.
