{"id":67272,"date":"2018-11-10T13:34:36","date_gmt":"2018-11-10T20:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=67272"},"modified":"2018-11-11T08:48:24","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T15:48:24","slug":"temple-on-mount-zion-b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2018\/11\/temple-on-mount-zion-b.html","title":{"rendered":"Temple on Mount Zion (B)"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32327\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/04\/oquirrh-mountain-utah-450x480-AV090428keh009sm.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32327\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/04\/oquirrh-mountain-utah-450x480-AV090428keh009sm.jpg\" alt=\"Temple near Daybreak, in SL Valley\" width=\"450\" height=\"480\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple (LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is a second installment of my brief report from the fourth biannual Temple on Mount Zion Conference, which is co-sponsored by Brigham Young University\u2019s Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and its College of Humanities and by the Interpreter Foundation.\u00a0 The conference, organized by Professor Stephen Ricks of Brigham Young University, convened today (Saturday) on the BYU campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ricks conducted the morning sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/authors\/wayment-thomas\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Wayment<\/a>, who teaches in the Classics program at BYU, presented on the subject of \u201cRecovering the Language of Purity after the First Revolt.\u201d\u00a0 He laid out ways in which early Christians thought of themselves\u2014their community and even their own bodies\u2014as \u201ctemples\u201d in a temple-less period when they didn\u2019t even so much as aspire to build a physical temple of their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/author\/matthewb\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew Bowen<\/a>, who teaches at the Hawaii campus of Brigham Young University, was the second speaker of the second morning session.\u00a0 He offered his presentation under the title \u201c\u2018And They Shall Be Joined Unto Thee\u2019: Levi, Levites, Priests, Angels, and the Importance of <em>Joinings<\/em> in Temple Architecture and Ritual.\u201d\u00a0 It was chock full of interesting biblical references (often invisible in translation) to joining-together, hands, handclasps, and embraces.\u00a0 Matt Bowen\u2019s close readings of scripture are often very stimulating.\u00a0 The picture of reality afforded by temple architecture and ritual, he argued, is one of being continually encircled by heavenly beings.\u00a0 (There\u2019s a lot to think about in that.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/author\/jeff\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey M. Bradshaw<\/a>, a vice president of the Interpreter Foundation, was the concluding speaker of the morning, treating the topic of \u201cBeauty and Truth in Moses 1.\u201d\u00a0 As he typically does, he accompanied his remarks with excellent illustrations, which, we anticipate, will be included in the eventual video presentation of this conference on the Interpreter Foundation website (<a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of Jeff\u2019s presentation for me was his careful elucidation of the structure of Moses 1, involving attention to a pattern of being in the spirit world, falling to the earth, defeating Satan, calling upon God, enjoying a vision at the veil, and, then, being in the presence of the Lord.
