\u00a0Read the (eventual) book!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67290\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/11\/Medinet_Habu_Temple_R05.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67290\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/11\/Medinet_Habu_Temple_R05.jpg\" alt=\"Medinet Habu\" width=\"597\" height=\"268\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A general view from the south toward the mortuary temple of Ramses III.<br>(Wikimedia CC public domain photo by Marc Ryckaert)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/author\/johng\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Gee<\/a>, an Egyptologist who earned his master\u2019s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his doctorate from Yale University, made remarks under the title of \u201cPut Off Thy Shoes from Off Thy Feet\u201d that concentrated mostly on artwork in the New Kingdom mortuary temple\u00a0of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu, located on the west bank of the Nile River opposite Luxor. \u00a0Surveying 734 scenes portraying the pharaoh, he noted striking patterns regarding when the pharaoh was depicted as shod with sandals and when he was shown barefoot. \u00a0On the whole, they seem to correspond with whether or not he was engaged in sacral activities in the most holy parts of the temple, and they suggest a context for the story of Egyptian-born Moses (\u201cPrince of Egypt\u201d) and the burning bush. \u00a0\u201cDraw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground\u201d (Exodus 3:5).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The final speaker of the day was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/author\/mattr\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matt Roper<\/a>, whose chosen title was \u201cClothed with Glory: Sacred Vestments and the Restoration.\u201d \u00a0He shared with the audience a number of fascinating accounts of people who experienced visions, prior to the revelation of the temple ordinances in Nauvoo, in which they saw heavenly beings clothed in temple robes and related garments. \u00a0I doubt that very many in the audience, if any, were aware of these intriguing reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Again, it was a really fine symposium. \u00a0Kudos to Stephen Ricks, who organized it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saturday evening, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland delivered the\u00a02018 Neal A. Maxwell Lecture, sponsored by the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at BYU. \u00a0His subject was \u201cThe Maxwell Legacy in the 21st Century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I did not attend the speech, partly because my wife and I had tickets for a performance of <em>Wait Until Dark<\/em> at the Hale Centre Theatre up in Sandy City. \u00a0We went up with friends, had dinner near the theater, and very much enjoyed the play. \u00a0(It has been a great week of drama for us. \u00a0We had wanted to see <em>Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street<\/em> at the Pioneer Theater in Salt Lake City on Friday night, but, alas, we weren\u2019t able to fit it in. \u00a0Still, in addition to <em>Wait Until Dark<\/em>, we managed to see a production of Agatha Christie\u2019s <em>The Mousetrap<\/em> at BYU and an excellent production of Cole Porter\u2019s and P. G.
