In the meantime, an issue that might arise in the effort to obtain<\/em> fish oil, but that is otherwise pretty completely unrelated:<\/p>\n

Please notice, incidentally, how smoothly I\u2019ve moved in this post from fish oil to fish intelligence. \u00a0And now, I proceed on from fish intelligence to the intelligence of even the tinest particles of matter:<\/p>\n

This argument for a kind of panpsychism inescapably reminds me of Orson Pratt\u2019s speculation that\u00a0all matter is inherently active, self-moving and therefore \u201cintelligent in its sphere,\u201d and his positing of\u00a0the existence of \u201cultimate atoms\u201d that cannot be subdivided and that therefore suggest the existence of a universe that is \u201cintelligent in all its parts\u201d and that is eternally indestructible.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As part of the online description of the 1991 anthology\u00a0The Essential Orson Pratt<\/em><\/a> put it,<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pratt\u2019s most controversial speculation was that atoms, then thought to be indestructible and indivisible, were intelligent, self-conscious, sentient, self-propelled particles which bonded together to form colonies in the shape of plants, minerals, animals, humans, and gods, and which were tutored over time in the \u201cgreat school of the universe.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s some good news \u2014 for those who may be worrying about whether they\u2019re genetically foredoomed to short lifespans \u2014 with a distinct Utah and even Latter-day Saint connection:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the connection to Utah and even to the Church? \u00a0Ancestry.com<\/a> is headquartered in the Utah Valley town of Lehi, and there can be little reasonable doubt that the population of Utah tends to have a somewhat higher interest in family history and genealogy than the people in most states do:<\/p>\n
