It\u2019s often said that, as we age, the time seems to go by faster and faster.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I can testify from personal experience, having long since entered extreme geezerhood, that this is true. \u00a0Not infrequently, I\u2019ll be thinking about a film from five or ten years back only to look it up and find that it actually appeared twenty-five or thirty years ago. \u00a0And many of the allusions that I make in my classrooms now sail right over the heads of my students; they\u2019ve never so much as heard<\/em> of them. \u00a0(Of course, to be fair, that\u2019s also the case when \u2014 as I often do \u2014 I make a comparison in my class discussion of the Arabic fable Kalila and Dimna<\/em>\u00a0between one of the leading characters in it and\u00a0the character of Iago in Shakespeare\u2019s tragedy Othello.<\/em> \u00a0Typically, in a class of fifty or sixty students, three or maybe four will have read the play and been familiar with Iago.)<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Anyway, this flight from Los Angeles to Sydney also seemed to pass more rapidly than I recall from previous occasions. \u00a0Of course, I did watch four fairly shallow and fast-paced \u00a0movies in order to pass the time \u2014 Skyscraper<\/em>, with Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson; Ant Man and the Wasp<\/em>; The Meg<\/em>; and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom<\/em> \u2014 and we did have an empty seat between us (the only one, so far as I noticed, on the entire plane). \u00a0I even napped, fairly poorly, for several hours. \u00a0And I read a bit, including half a dozen chapters in the first volume of\u00a0Heilige: Die Geschichte der Kirche Jesu Christi in den Letzten Tagen<\/em>, which is the German version of the still relatively new official history\u00a0Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days: The Standard of Truth: 1815\u20131846<\/em>. \u00a0I\u2019ve read it in English, of course, but I thought that it would be fun to read it in German, too. \u00a0I hope that Latter-day Saints generally have read it or are currently reading it.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n We took a shuttle from the airport to our hotel, which was probably a mistake. \u00a0By the time we actually got on our way, amidst terrible stop-and-go traffic, we had circled the airport for at least an hour, picking various people up. \u00a0After a very long flight, we just wanted to get to our room and stretch out.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Oh well. \u00a0We\u2019re here now. \u00a0Somehow, the Australia Border Forces failed to keep us out.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n My lecture here in Sydney isn\u2019t until 27 November, but we were able to come early without missing any additional classes because of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and because, on this coming Tuesday, owing to BYU\u2019s peculiar academic calendar, regularly-scheduled Tuesday\/Thursday classes have been replaced by Monday\/Wednesday\/Friday classes. \u00a0My goal is to be done with jet-lag by the time I deliver the lecture; at least one<\/em> person should stay awake for the whole thing.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Posted from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u00a0 \u00a0 It\u2019s often said that, as we age, the time seems to go by faster and faster. \u00a0 I can testify from personal experience, having long since entered extreme geezerhood, that this is true. \u00a0Not infrequently, I\u2019ll be thinking about a film from five or ten years back only to look it up and […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-67512","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"\n
